In 2023, Minnesota enacted a law committing to 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040, and the key to achieving this goal lies in developing transmission and clean energy infrastructure. Currently, the Minnesota Department of Transportation prohibits colocation of electric transmission lines on controlled access highways and interstates, and the NextGen Highways Minnesota Coalition is exploring opportunities to overcome this prohibition so that transmission developers can have to option to site power lines along interstate highways.
