Interregional transmission could save $3 billion annually by 2035 and $4 billion by 2040 by empowering regions to access lower-cost power from remote generation sources.

Our Mission

NextGen Highways is building coalitions and advocating for common-sense policy reforms to streamline the development of new electric transmission and other critical infrastructure across the U.S. Our immediate focus is on modernizing outdated regulations that prevent the co-location of new transmission lines within existing highway corridors, which reduces delays, minimizes environmental and landowner impact, and creates opportunities for broadband and other infrastructure deployment. In the long term, NextGen Highways strives to facilitate strategic partnerships, optimize planning frameworks, and champion a more integrated and efficient infrastructure development environment in the U.S.

Our Work

Across the country, NextGen Highways is spearheading coalitions to modernize and streamline the deployment of essential transmission infrastructure. In Minnesota, NGH successfully drove legislative reform that cleared the way for co-location of transmission lines in highway rights-of-way after decades of prohibitive restrictions. Building on this momentum, NGH has officially launched a new coalition in Colorado, where we are working closely with stakeholders, state agencies, utilities, and policymakers to identify legislative and regulatory reform opportunities. In Illinois, language to lift barriers to co-location has been included in the Clean Energy Jobs Act now before the legislature. Similar efforts are underway in Iowa and Oregon, and NGH is also at varying early stages of coalition scoping and partnership work in a dozen more states. Our work at the state level is designed to bring together diverse stakeholders in a collaborative framework to solve problems, generate new ideas, and advance mutual goals. By leveraging our growing network, NGH is helping states unlock new infrastructure development opportunities that are essential to the country’s future.
